I am passionate about honey bees and beekeeping as a hobby. My desire is to help people learn how to start beekeeping for fun or for extra income by making fewer mistakes and keeping healthier bees.
Beekeeping can be confusing with so many different opinions. As an EAS certified master beekeeper I'm working hard making several videos a week to help you unravel all the beekeeping chatter and find what works for you.
I've kept honey bees since the 90s and still find beekeeping an amazing life experience. Also in many of my videos I tie in some life lessons I've learned through beekeeping.
I offer many online beekeeping courses as well as a mentorship program:

David, great job! Spot on delivery, great content... love your personality and advice is very very helpful! Much appreciated. /Paul
Your bees make a lot of propolis wow it’s just like gum
How do you like that hive stand, David? Do they seem to hold up well over the winter? Thank you for the videos, always some good information. 🐝🐝
Thanks David oh my goodness I"m way way too slow at least an hour.
Nice that you are learning and indeed one hour is a bit too long so I hope this video will bring some techniques for you to try. I’m addressing this more in my livestream tonight: www.honeybeesonline.com/live
I wonder if you are looking for swarm cells and take upp one frame of brood, if it would have caped brood, larve and eggs but no queen cells. Would that be enough to confirm that they are not planning to swarm or would you need to check more frames?
I’m out of swarm season now
I use shousugiban on the exterior of my cedar boxes. If done right there isn't much char since you brush that out. I then seal it with a mixture if raw linseed oil and beeswax. I've wondered if that would be good for the inside too.
Given that the enymology comes from Latin via Greek which favors the flow of the word above other thing (so a Latin professortold me), i would guess it is praa polis. MW and HowToPronounce agree.
Thanks David. You're the best as always! My Mom was just asking how ofter we should be checking on the new hive. I sent this to her!
David a quick question on the honey supers I have like five complete boxes full with honey in the supers but none of it is capped is there something I can do to help them out with capping itCharlie PA
As if there is no excuder between brood en super boxes?
As I mentioned in a recent video, I do not use queen excluders as I allow a honey super to be my queen excluder.
bee busy
Hey Dave, do you use the deep, super brood box config alot?
Usually I use two deeps, and sometimes one honey super as the permanent hive, and honey supers on top of that configuration. Sometimes I do have one deep and one super, but not very many. Thanks for being a subscriber for a year!
What’s a thurl inspection?
Thorough. This means a longer, more intense inspection than just a quick look.
A thorough inspection is one that consist of more than just checking for eggs.
You do an absolutely WONDERFUL JOB teaching others how to do a video with the bees! WAY TO GO!!!
Thank you very much!
Nice video. Are those bean fields next to you. Bees coming back from there? Thanks
Yes they are
Boycotting Pres debate unless KENNEDY is going to be on there!
Just beekeeping please
Read my mind!!! I just did my first double brood inspection as a newbie. It took too long and this will help sooo much!
Glad I could help!
Thank you Dave! I’m going to try this 15:52
You got this!
Hey David, wouldn’t you want to keep the hive open until you know the results of your mite wash? If your mite could was high you could treat them (Formic Pro) without having to take the hive apart again.
I had faith they would be low 😄 I generally go back in a couple of days and add the treatment if needed. But you are right you could add it that day.
Thanks David.
Glad to help!
With my african bees iam speed running this The longer I take the worst for me and bees because they are stinging my suit as soon as I get 10 meters close to the hive lol
Ouch!
You might wanna get a new queen. We had a very violent hive....got a new queen, and as Her babies were born, and the other bees died with time, they are now a very calm hive! Total game changer!!!
I have trouble finding my queen
Many people do, and try using my 5 frame nuc hive as your trainer hive.
Love your content. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge ❤
Thanks for watching!
7 years
I got same plunger but the two pieces type with top squared pattern where is no need to line the queen parallel to the lines its just squars that match the size of the queen thorax and as im comparing, mine is much easier than this thought this one is better for one hand use , i got little anxious watching definitely it would perfect if the top is square patterned 👍🏻👍🏻
This is such a good family moment.
It is!!
14 years apart
I'm always looking for new recipes.
Cool
Another great video! It was great hearing you two interact. I have been loving Phyllis’s videos!!
Thanks Leah
Keep a strong hive and dont give them more room then they need
Im in south giles county on the border of tn and al. Would have loved to grab some coffee.
Thanks, you're pretty far away from Martin, Tennessee.
They can be tricky. Bees can get through a gap when plunger is all the way down. Young queems can wriggle through top. Great tool though.
Looks like an Extreme amount Labor ?
Yes, I agree, especially for a beekeeper with less than 5 years of experience.
You can save some honey and put it in the hive when supplemental feedings are needed. This is natural and not sugar water.
What does it mean when a hive is honey bound? How? Where? What do you do?
Great question for the livestream. Here's the link for this week: ruclips.net/user/liveWyDOnzRy5O4
I just removed my top board based on this video. Hives are hard enough to inspect so, as said in video why add another thing to remove.
shout-out to your glasses for fixing the audio there
Question for you, David, I purchased one of those isolation cages to help in Queen rearing but my issue is that is looks as if the queen can escape as there is a gap between the cage, the frame support (on the box) and top metal cover of the cage... I've had to shove some wax in there to try and seal it, etc.. Have you seen this issue? I wonder if it's not boxes as they are pretty old.
In the past I’ve used them and I never had a queen escape but mine were built different and didn’t have that much of a gap up there. I’m gonna check mine this week so we’ll find out👍
@@beek Pleas let me know what you find. I can see how much of a great tool this can be.... unless she is able slip away! LOL
If you'd like to watch my sister's new channel, search for Hazlewood Homestead and be sure to subscribe and here's the link: www.youtube.com/@farmspices
David, I really enjoy watching your videos. I'm a beginner bee keeper with only a single hive. I noticed you just marked this queen with a white marker. Shouldn't you bee using a green marker for 2024? Or is this a very old video that you've just posted?
Here's a follow up video that answered that question: ruclips.net/video/BmHJr0RszKk/видео.html
@@beek Sorry, didn't see the follow-up video. Hey, one mistake in 16 years is not that bad a record!
David, why not put the extra frame into the new super in place of a new frame?
Because that frame is from a deep box so it is 3 inches larger than the honey super box.
@@beek OK👍
David and Phyllis, this video speaks to me and for more than beekeeping. I too took part in restoring a log house that my brother's in laws had on their farm. Literally doing all the work by hand like it was done originally. Best years of my adolescents.
That’s so cool to hear. Phyllis and I thank you for sharing your cabin story too.
BEST VIDEO YET 👍 AS ALWAYS KEEP FAMILY CLOSE NO MATTER WHAT !
Thank you for sharing, yes family is so important and sadly most people do not realize this until you get too old to enjoy the family.

This has to be your best vdo
Wow thanks for sharing
You guys said David was 11 when she left for college, so 7 years different
If you were 11 when she went to college, then she would have been about 18 so 7 years apart. LOL
Do I need to let the feed solution cool all the way to room temp before giving it to the bees?
No not really, my hot tap water is usually fine.
David is 7 years younger assuming you went to college at 18.
